Live In TokyoCharles Tolliver Label: Charly SNAP114CD Price: £ 8.80 (£7.65 outside EU)
A quartet recording from 1974 with pianist Stanley Cowell, bassist Clint Houston and Clifford Barbaro on drums. A strong trumpeter and composer in the so-called 'post-bop' style, Charles Tolliver recorded a series of highly regarded albums for his own Strata East label in the Seventies. 'Live In Tokyo' is an inspired quartet recording from 1974. For this particular edition of his fluid group set-up Music Inc, Tolliver was joined by pianist Stanley Cowell, bassist Clint Houston, with Clifford Barbaro on drums. The group's tight jazz style, a cross between bebop and 'new thing', has its musical roots in John Coltrane and Art Blakey. Two particularly striking examples of the group's creativity on display here are its maverick interpretation of the Monk standard, 'Round Midnight'. And Cowell's beautiful mid-tempo ballad, 'Effi'. Liner notes by leading US journalist Greg Tate, a regular contributor to 'Vibe Magazine' and 'The Village Voice'. Tracklisting
