56 seminal recordings produced by the legendary Sun Records owner Sam Phillips, the man who discovered Elvis, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis.

The name of Sam Phillips, who died in 2003, is synonymous with Sun Records, arguably the world’s most influential independent record label. Sam Phillips was single-handedly responsible for discovering and launching the recording careers of not just one but several of the giants of 20th century popular music, including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Howlin’ Wolf and Roy Orbison.

As well as being an extraordinary talent scout with an ear for the past and a nose for what was new, an innovative engineer and producer of records which had their own totally unique sound, he was also a shrewd business man who was respected by his artists and renowned for his charisma and intellect. His impeccable taste embraced music of every kind, including blues, hillbilly and gospel. From his tiny studio housed at 706 Union, Memphis – arguably the most famous address in America after The White House and Gracelands -he built up the finest catalogue of rockabilly sides of any label.

The 56 tracks on this double cd set are not just another re-tread of the label’s hits, but a meticulously-compiled set showcasing the diversity of the label’s music and Sam Phillips’ inestimable contribution which changed the face of popular music.

The set’s music and its 16-page, illustrated booklet document how Sam Phillips took Sun Records from its deepest Southern roots to the later ground-breaking Rock ‘n’ Roll recordings.
