This generous 24 track compilation provides a superb overview of James' latter day recordings made for Bobby Robinson's Fire/Fury label from late 1959 up until the year of his death in 1963. Elmore James is without doubt one of the most important and influential figures on the post war blues scene. With this year marking the 50th Anniversary of his death, the legend of Elmore James lives and his popularity is as great as it has ever been. His music, and particularly his guitar playing, has been a major source of inspiration for countless blues and rock musicians over the years. Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Brian Jones, Duane Allman and Jimi Hendrix are just a few of the rock legends who have acknowledged his influence on them. This generous 24 track compilation provides a superb overview of James' latter day recordings made for Bobby Robinson's Fire/Fury label from late 1959 up until the year of his death in 1963. There was much more to Elmore James than his famous 'Dust My Broom' riff - a fact that has escaped some of his imitators - and this collection showcases some of that versatility. His guitar work here ranges from the searingly intense to the amazingly subtle, whilst his vocals communicate the same anguish and emotions as his great mentor, Robert Johnson. Some of the highlights here are 'Twelve Year Old Boy', 'My Bleeding Heart' (a song popularised by Jimi Hendrix), the cover of his great mentor Robert Johnson's 'Standing At The Crossroads' and what was to be his last hit record, 'It Hurts Me Too'.
