His Sun YearsJohnny Cash Label: Charly SNAJ706CD Price: £ 14.67 (£12.76 outside EU)
3-CD set featuring all the recordings Cash made for the legendary Sun Records including classics such as ‘Folsom Prison Blues’, ‘I Walk The Line’ and ‘Ballad Of A Teenage Queen’. Johnny Cash's distinguished recording career began back in the 50's with these seminal recordings made for Sam Phillip's legendary Sun label. One of the first country figures to make the pop charts, Cash is as popular today as he has ever been, having gained recognition from a whole new generation of listeners with his acclaimed live performances and new recordings in recent years. Many authorities, however, consider these Sun sides to be his finest hour, although he went on to greater commercial and chart success with subsequent recordings he made for Columbia Records. This 3-CD box set contains all Cash's songs released by Sun and includes the original versions of such classics as Folsom Prison Blues, I Walk The Line, Cry, Cry, Cry and Ballad Of A Teenage Queen. Each of the 20-track discs has been carefully themed, compiled and sequenced. Disc one, Down South, focuses on his rockabilly, R&B, folk, gospel and country ballad recordings, whilst disc two, the self-explanatory Country Boy, contains his own songs as well as several classics from the likes of Hank Williams, Gene Autry and Marty Robbins. The set's third disc, Sugartime, comprises material intended for the pop market. Strikingly packaged in a compact box, each disc in the set is housed in its own wallet. The set's 24-page, illustrated booklet gives a year-by-year account of Cash's career with Sun Records between 1954 and 1958, as well as an introduction by Sam Phillips himself. Tracklisting
