THE BEST OF THE VEE-JAY YEARS, 1955 – 1961

The Staple Singers remained active and inspirational from the mid-Fifties right up to the death of Pops Staples in 2000 and were highly influential in both gospel and pop circles.

Well before they moved into the secular field after joining Stax Records in the late Sixties, The Staple Singers had already established themselves as one of the world’s foremost gospel groups with Vee-Jay Records.

Skillfully combining elements of blues, folk and soul, the seminal recordings they made for Vee-Jay between 1955 and 1961 were much in the traditional deeply Southern spiritual style and are generally regarded as being their finest hour in gospel terms. Lead vocals were shared between Mavis and Pops Staples, with the latter’s heavily-reverbed guitar adding a distinctive touch.

This 28 track selection of highlights from that era includes ‘Will The Circle Be Unbroken’, ‘Let’s Go Home’, ‘Uncloudy Day’ and ‘This May Be The Last Time’, the inspiration behind The Rolling Stones chart topping 1965 single, ‘The Last Time’.
