Gene Chandler has been making consistently fine records for well over forty years, during which he has notched up over forty hits in the US alone, making him one of the most successful R&B/soul singers of all time.

A leading purveyor of the Chicago soft soul style, Chandler first shot to prominence in 1961 with his doo-wop inspired mega hit, ‘Duke Of Earl’ – an irresistible gem of early Sixties pop-soul lunacy. It topped the U.S. charts for three weeks and sold over a million copies.

His best recordings were made in the sixties for Vee-Jay Records and its Constellation subsidiary and ‘Duke Of Earl’ comprises 30 highlights from these fruitful Vee-Jay years, including several songs written for him by Curtis Mayfield.
